BEER CAN APPRECIATION DAY 2025
24th January marks Beer Can Appreciation Day. We could wax lyrical all day about the environmental and quality control benefits of the physical can. But in an increasingly crowded market of craft beer, take a step into any bottle shop or bar, and you can quickly be overwhelmed with choice. So, what sets us from the crowd? How do we create something that is unique to us, and tells our story?
Born from the journey our Co-Founders Annie Clements and Alex Troncoso took from Australia to finally being grounded in Bristol, the story of the brewery is rooted in curiosity and possibilities, in dreaming big and making it happen. So how do we translate this collection of experiences into an eye-catching design? There is no one better to explain than our Co-Founder Annie:
When thinking about our branding we knew we wanted an illustrative approach that would reflect what we aim to create: a world that is fresh, friendly and curious. Late one night on the way home from our local pub in Islington, we came across a fox cruising down the road, and between that little guy and a few pints, we started to think about how to incorporate animals and scenic imagery in telling our story…
…working closely with a local independent illustrator, Alexia Tucker brought all of our ideas and values to life, including our beloved flying hippo. Over the months leading up to the brewery I would often wake up in the middle of the night with ideas, beer names and stories, and somehow Alexia converted those thoughts into magical reality.
And so, the storybook design of our core range was born. Featuring inspiring landscapes, coupled with a whole menagerie of animals, you soon become embroiled in our dreamlike world. If you take a close look at our can designs, you may notice another special element that helps us to tell our story. If you line up our cans in the correct order, you will see that each can design from our core range links to become one continuous panorama, bringing our world to life.
Along with the art, you need a precisely formatted layout to really make the can design sing – step forward Sammy who handles our graphic design. His design expertise married with Alexia’s illustrations and the clear vision of Annie and Alex, melds together, and out of this emerges the can in its final form. It’s the story of Lost and Grounded as a whole. As it takes a range of beer styles to display the panorama of illustrations, it takes many people from all walks of life to create the beer that you take that satisfying sup of when the occasion calls. The story of Lost and Grounded Brewers is not just the world our flying hippo carries, but the journey along the way.
